Marriages in police stations

Don't conduct marriages in police stations: court

Says young couples may not have clear vision of future

MADURAI: The Madras High Court Bench here has said that it is high time the Director General of Police (DGP) issued necessary instructions to his subordinates asking them not to conduct marriages in police stations in the interest of young couples who are prone to take decisions without a comprehensive understanding of the consequences.

A Division Bench comprising Justices P. Murgesen and T. Mathivanan said: "It is appropriate to note that nowadays marriages are performed in police stations. Of course, it is done by the police officials with good intentions. However, some young people who are under the influence of so-called 'love' might approach the police for conducting their marriages without a clear vision of their future."

The observations were made while disposing of a habeas corpus petition filed by the mother of an 18-year-old boy from Madurai who was allegedly coerced to marry his cousin by her parents and the police. The boy confirmed that he was forced to marry the girl. However, he told the court that the marriage took place outside the police station.

Recording the submission made by the boy that he was not facing any kind of threat from the police at present and after hearing the petitioner's counsel R. Alagumani, the judges set the boy at liberty as he was a major.
